I am an American who has lived abroad for almost 2 ½ decades and loves learning about cultures. I had a consulting business in China for many years, but have moved to the Middle East in the last few years and continue to do consulting work based from the Arabian Peninsula.
This is my personal blog where I talk about things I am thinking about and meditating on. Most of the themes revolve around culture, business, and leadership.I believe that these things are interesting and important. Sometimes I post about totally unrelated things that have piqued my interest and captured my imagination.
The purpose of this blog is to challenge and amuse you. Hopefully, some of the things I talk about here will help you be more interculturally aware, help you be a better leader, and help you a little bit on life’s journey. Please subscribe via email so you’ll be able to get in on all the fun!
I have been a self-employed business owner since I started teaching piano lessons at age 12. Okay, I wasn’t fully supporting myself then, but my last job where I had to “punch a clock” and have someone keep track of my work was when I was 20 and still in college. I can’t remember a day since then that I wasn’t excited to get out of bed and do what I loved to do. During this time I have been a musician, an educator, and a business consultant. Most of those years have been spent living overseas experiencing other cultures first-hand.
Since getting out of high school over 30 years ago I have taken at least one college class for about 24 of those years. It is no secret that I love learning. Some of those classes were actually for credit, so I actually have a BA in Music Education, a BA in History, an MBA, and a Ph.D. in Business. Despite all that education, when I’m driving I still get hopelessly lost without my wife, Cindy, navigating for me. Maybe I need a geography class or two.
Cindy, my high school sweetheart, and I have been married for almost 34 years. We have 3 grown sons who grew up in China and now live in the USA.
My hobbies include reading (for information–I haven’t read a novel since the 1980’s), exercising, and playing music. I have a genetic defect inherited from my mother where it is hard for me to sleep past 4 or 4:30 in the morning, so you could call me the ultimate morning person. Not always fun, but it does make it easy to get a lot of work done!
